Robert James
Callos
Nov 2, 1947 — Sep 26, 2026
Robert James Callos (Bob), passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by his loved ones, on September 26, 2026.
Bob was born in Longview, WA on November 2, 1947 to Jim and Lorna Callos. Bob was the youngest of four children, Diane, Gary, and Adele.
Bob graduated from R.A.Long High School in 1965. Graduating at age 17, he did not meet the minimum age of 18 years old to apply for work at any of the local mills. He went to work at Regal Gas Station where, at his tender age, became the manager. Upon turning 18, he was hired by Weyerhaeuser and worked in the planner mill.
On August 9, 1967 Bob was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served two years and was deployed to Chu Lai, Vietnam where he trained in radio teletype and morse code. He was discharged from the U.S. Army on May 9, 1969 and was hired by Reynolds Aluminum Co. on May 20th. In 1983, receiving a buy-out from the company, Bob retired from Reynolds/Alcoa after working as a crane operator for 32 years.
Bob took advantage of an opportunity to start a second career by enrolling at Lower Columbia College, earning an associate’s degree, and becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse. He worked for PSA as a private in-home care nurse.
Bob and Vicki (Benton) started dating on August 8, 1984 after getting re-acquainted at a class reunion planning party. They were married on February 21, 1985, and were together for 42 years. Having no children of his own, he was blessed to have Vicki’s two children, Tracy and Jason, in his life. His four granddaughters filled him with pride and joy. He was their beloved “Papou”.
Bob was a formidable billiards player, and started playing league pool in 1974. He played at the “Last Chance”, “Maltese”, and “Masthead”, where he won the local Longview Captain Championship.
Bob had a profound love of music, which gave him comfort to the very end of his life. He enjoyed playing the guitar, and could name every song he heard and tell you who the artist and band members were.
Bob had a quick wit, and everyone around him could count on a lot of laughs when together. He did not refrain from humiliating himself for a laugh. His playful side was a draw for everyone. Bob was always a bit of a daredevil, sometimes at his own expense. “Watch this!”
His greatest joy was spending time with family. He found a happy home with Vicki, joy with kids, Tracy and Jason and their spouses, and absolute love for his granddaughters.
In the last couple of years, with his health declining, the family that he loved so much rallied in love and support. The loss of Bob weighs heavy on the hearts of everyone who knew and loved him. He will be profoundly missed!
Bob is survived by his wife, Vicki, of Longview, WA
Daughter and son-in-law, Tracy and Joe Marlow, of Longview, WA
Son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Theresa Dietel, of Vancouver, WA
Granddaughters, Katie and Hannah Dietel, of Vancouver, WA, and Bethany and Jaidon Marlow, of Longview, WA
Brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Connie Callos, of Priest River, ID
Sister and brother-in-law, Diane and Len Piro, of Lebanon, OR
And numerous nieces and nephews (who referred to Bob as the “fun uncle”).
