Larry LaVerne Gipson, affectionately known as "Griz" or "Papa Bear," passed away on August 22, 2025, in Longview, Washington, where he was born on December 29, 1956. A beloved figure to many, Larry's life was marked by his sense of community and unwavering support for those around him.
Graduating from Castle Rock High School in 1976, Larry went on to build a respected career as a welder and diesel mechanic. His strong work ethic and practical skills were hallmarks of his life, but it was his personality that left an indelible mark on all who knew him. Larry was known not only for his willingness to lend a helping hand, no matter the situation, but also for his candid honesty—he wasn't afraid to tell you how it is, good or bad. A true friend, he would literally give the shirt off his back for those in need.
Larry’s family cherishes fond memories of him, recounting how he embodied the spirit of generosity and strength. As a father, he made a lasting impression on his daughter, Christina Gipson, and his son, Russell Gipson. He also greatly valued the bonds he shared with his brother, Randy Gipson, and sister-in-law, Priss Gipson. His legacy continues through his nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.
Larry shared meaningful friendships throughout his life, notably with lifelong friends Butch Elise and Dick and Lesa Kline, which enriched his years and brought him much joy. He relied on his tenacity and determination to accomplish any task he set his mind to, epitomizing resilience in every aspect of his life.
He is predeceased by his father, Myrle Gipson, his mother, Virginia Gipson, his brother, Mike Gipson, and his grandson, Glenn Lee Gipson. He left the world surrounded by loved ones, leaving a profound void that will be felt deeply by his family and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, where many will gather to honor Larry's vibrant spirit and the countless ways he touched their lives. In recognizing the impact he had on his community and family, we celebrate a man whose hugs were as soft as a teddy bear, yet whose presence was as formidable as a Grizzly bear. Larry LaVerne Gipson will be remembered with love and respect.
