Edwin I Mundel, affectionately known as "EI," was born on June 28, 1940, in Havre, Montana. He embarked on a fulfilling journey through life that not only included a commitment to family and friends but also a passion for adventure. Edwin graduated from Columbia Falls High School in Montana and later proudly served his country as a Navy Veteran, a testimony to his dedication and resilience.
Edwin's personal traits were as unique as the man himself—unpredictable and deeply loyal, he never forgot a friend. His relationships were marked by love, and he cherished moments spent with his children, always insisting on creating special cards and gifts for them. Edwin's delight in these personal touches was one of the many ways he expressed his love.
An avid hunter and fisherman, Edwin was skilled in woodworking and took great pride in his ability to fix just about anything. His passion extended to the culinary arts as he became known for smoking fish and meat, often sending delicious packages to friends so they could share in his tasty creations.
Sadly, Edwin faced numerous health challenges in his later years, enduring a long struggle with COPD and digestive problems. His passing on November 21, 2025, in Longview, Washington, marks the end of a remarkable life characterized by determination and strength.
Edwin's legacy is carried on by his devoted wife, Dianne Mundel, with whom he shared 41 years of marriage, as well as their son, Jason Mundel, and daughter, Roxann Mundel Nagler. His family also includes stepson Bryan Vogel and stepdaughter Kelly Weigant Olds, alongside an impressive legacy of 44 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, with one more on the way. Alongside his living family members, Edwin is preceded in death by his son Chris Mundel, his mother Viola Staples (Mundel and Benson), father Ira Mundel, stepfather Joseph Benson, brother Joey Benson, who served in Vietnam, sister Eleanor Mundel, and stepson Mark Allen Vogel.
One of Edwin's proudest accomplishments was overcoming alcohol addiction. He quit drinking in 1986 and remained sober for the rest of his life, a testament to his strength and commitment to himself and his family.
Edwin I Mundel will be remembered for his boundless love for family, his adventurous spirit, and the impact he made in the hearts of those who knew him. His memory will live on in the cherished moments and memories he created throughout his life.
Per Ed's request, there will not be a service. His remains will be scattered above the Hungry Horse Dam in the South Fork River in the Spring 2026.
