Daniel Alfred Spjut was born June 3rd, 1943, in Snoqualmie Falls Washington to parents Alfred Julius and Mabel Lolla Spjut. Dan passed away August 22, 2024, in Longview, Washington surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Judy; Zander Lyndon Payne, and Alder Allen Payne.
Dan graduated from Mount Si High School in 1961 where he was an astounding multi-sport athlete. He went on to play basketball at Central Washington University under legendary coach Dean Nicholson. Dan moved to Longview in 1970 where he began a successful career in the industrial supply business. He became the Manager of Bearings Incorporated in 1972 and was the original Manager of King Bearing in 1978. Dan’s career advanced and he was named Vice President of King Bearing in charge of Western Operations. In 1990, Dan made a career change and became Purchasing Manager for Weyerhaeuser Company. He retired from Weyerhaeuser in 2005 as Northwest Regional Purchasing Manager.
Dan had a powerful sense of community. In his younger years he volunteered his time Coaching youth baseball, and basketball. Dan was passionate about Community Home Health and Hospice. In 2005 he volunteered his time serving on the Foundation Committee for CHHH. He was recruited as a Director on the Board in 2007. In 2009 he was elected President of the board where he served until his retirement in 2020. The organization grew and flourished under his leadership. In 2013 he received the Home Care
Association of Washington Volunteer of the Year award. Dan met and married the love of his life, Debi (Campbell), on November 21, 1981. Dan and Debi spent 43 wonderful years together, building a lasting and loving relationship with all who knew them. To know Dan was to love him. He was hard working, generous, and fun loving. He was always upbeat and positive. He was direct, decisive, and always brought out the best in those that collaborated with him. His work ethic was infectious. Dan was a 50-year member of the Longview Country Club where he enjoyed socializing with friends and hacking the ball around the course. He especially enjoyed annual trips to Eagle Crest Resort, spending time with family and friends, terrorizing the local golf courses, and revisiting the local attractions.
Dan is survived by his wife Debi, their children Dana Clayton (Brian), Brian Barnd-Spjut (Nichole), Darren Spjut, and Derek Spjut; their Kalama Family Chris and Kacy Payne, their children Ethan Payne (Olivia) and Steele Payne; Kabel Payne, and Braylex Payne who called Dan “Papa”; and the entire Campbell family including his in-laws Ben and Hazel Campbell.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Cowlitz County Event Center 1900 7 th Avenue, Longview, WA on August 31, 2024, from 1:00 – 3:00pm.
