Dorothy C.I. Shipman

Former longtime Longview resident Dorothy Caroline Irene Gorton McMahon Shipman, 99, passed away June 8, 2022, in Puyallup, Wash.

Dorothy was born May 13, 1923, in Deadwood, S.D., to William and Nellie (Lintin) Gorton, and completed the eighth grade.
On Dec. 8, 1939, she married Scott McMahon in Tacoma. They had two children. Scott preceded Dorothy in death, as did her parents and siblings. On Aug. 24, 1991, she married Ernest Shipman. They moved to Puyallup in 2002.

Dorothy sold shoes at Carl’s and Gallenkamp’s, and later drove bus for the City of Longview. She was a member of Eastern Star, Elks and Ladies of the Moose. She enjoyed bowling, dancing, camping, sewing, spending time with family and friends, and many happy years wintering in Yuma, Ariz.

Dorothy was a happy, fun-loving person. She loved children and offered a warm and loving home to foster children and others.

Survivors include her husband Ernest in Puyallup; a daughter and son-in-law, Mickie and Curt Arneson of Lakewood, Wash.; a son and daughter-in-law, Darel and Sandy McMahon of Longview; a son, Steven Shipman of Puyallup; seven grandchildren, Lorrie Brunson (Jeff) of Tacoma, Amy Cox (Jeff) of Fredricksburg, Va.; Lonny Arneson (Michelle) of Lakewood, Wash., Kristin Valentine (Vincent) of Longview, Leah Stadjuhar (Alan) of Chehalis, Wash., Amy Kinser (John) of Nampa, Idaho, and Amber Gunter (Jason) of Oklahoma City, Okla.; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and generations of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. July 23 at the Puyallup Church of the Nazarene. Final arrangements have been entrusted to Steele Chapel and Dorothy will be laid to rest at Longview Memorial Park.
